Bleach vs Naruto MUGEN: Big Rosters vs the Numbered Builds

Videos and download sites often show BVN-style games with enormous character grids. Most of those are MUGEN compilations, which are related to but different from the numbered builds preserved on this site.

What MUGEN is

MUGEN is a free fighting-game engine that lets fans assemble their own rosters, stages, and menus. Creators share complete compilations, and anime crossover rosters are among the most popular, which is why so many Bleach and Naruto characters appear in MUGEN videos.

A MUGEN compilation is a desktop program: you run it on a computer, and its contents depend entirely on whoever assembled that specific edition.

How the numbered builds differ

The numbered series preserved here, 1.7 through V3.5B, is a separate line of Flash-era browser games. Each build has a fixed roster, its own stages and modes, and runs inside the page with nothing to install.

Roster sizes differ by design too. The largest numbered build here, V3.5B, has 50 selectable battle entries and 37 assists, while MUGEN compilations can advertise hundreds of characters of very mixed quality.

What 300, 500, or 600 characters usually means

Those numbers are compilation labels, not steps in the numbered sequence. A 300-character edition is a fan-assembled MUGEN roster of roughly that size, and two editions with the same number can contain completely different content.

A quick way to tell them apart: a huge scrolling select screen almost always means a MUGEN compilation, while the numbered builds keep their whole selection grid on one screen.

Which one should you play?

Choose a MUGEN compilation when you want sheer roster size on a desktop machine and do not mind uneven balance between characters.

Choose the numbered builds when you want the classic arena-fighting feel in a browser: start with 3.3 on the homepage, jump to 3.5B for Mosou waves, or open the version comparison guide to weigh every preserved build.
